TLS 1.3 (Transport Layer Security)
TLS 1.3 is the latest version of the Transport Layer Security protocol, which encrypts data in transit between a browser or app and a server so it cannot be read or tampered with on the network. In healthcare AI it is the baseline expectation for protecting patient data while it moves between systems.
TLS 1.3 (standardized as RFC 8446 in 2018) matters because it removes the older cipher suites and handshake shortcuts that weakened earlier versions, shortens the connection handshake, and makes forward secrecy the default — so a key compromised later cannot decrypt traffic recorded earlier. When a hospital IT team evaluates an AI vendor, "TLS 1.3 in transit, encryption at rest" is the baseline answer to expect.
Encryption in transit is only half the picture — sensitive data also needs encryption at rest.
